California developer to build West Oahu's hotel, a Marriott Residence Inn in Kapolei

California constructer R.D. Olson Development plans to build a 150-room Marriott Residence Inn in Kapolei, which would be the first limited-service hotel in the West Oahu community, and decision-making for the landowner confirmed to PBN.

Steve Kelly, vice president of an affiliate of The James Campbell Co., one of the largest landowners on Oahu, told PBN, that it is under contract with R.D. Olson to buy the property. The California developer would develop, own and operate the Marriott Residence Inn on the 3.5-acre site near the Kapolei Judiciary Complex at the corner of Kapolei Parkway and the newly built Kealakapu Road.

Kelly was one of several speakers Friday at the 11th Annual West Oahu Conference called "Building West Oahu's Future," which was held at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa at Ko Olina Resort.

Currently, there are no hotels in Kapolei, although Florida-based developer DeBartolo Development has plans to build two hotels as part of its planned 67-acre Ka Makana Alii regional shopping center in East Kapolei. The nearest hotels are located further west at the Ko Olina Resort.

R.D. Olson, which was named developer of the year by Marriott (NYSE: MAR), also developed Maui's first Courtyard by Marriott hotel that opened about two years ago near the Kahului Airport.

Another Marriott-branded hotel is being planned on Oahu near the Honolulu International Airport, as PBN first reported. Seattle-based developer Hadley Properties, which developed the Airport Industrial Park in Honolulu and the landmark Amfac Towers in Downtown Honolulu —now the Topa Financial Center — plans to build a 15-story, 247-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel.

In addition, a Courtyard by Marriott is currently being built in Laie near the Polynesian Cultural Center and Brigham Young University Hawaii.
